Utpanna Ekadashi

Falls on the dark eleventh of Margashirsha (Agrahayana) — the first Ekadashi, observed in remembrance of the origin of the Ekadashi tithi itself. According to the Puranas, the goddess Ekadashi sprang forth from Vishnu's body after he slew the demon Mura — hence 'Utpanna'. The observance of Ekadashi vrata is described as beginning from this day, making it the foremost of the vratas.
