Kartikeya

Kartikeya is the son of Shiva and Parvati, the six-headed (Shanmukha) commander of the celestial army. According to the Puranas he was born from the gods' longing to slay the demon Tarakasura, and his weapon is the vel (spear); his vehicle is the peacock. In South India he is immensely popular as Murugan, Skanda, and Subrahmanya. In Bengal he is worshipped alongside Lakshmi, Saraswati, and Ganesha in the Durga Puja idol, and the month of Kartik is named after him.
